Established in 1917 by Charles S. Moomy in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, the Carlisle Tire and Rubber Company initially produced inner tubes for Montgomery Ward and Company. Despite facing the challenges of the Great Depression and subsequent corporate restructuring, the company persevered. The onset of World War II prompted a shift to synthetic rubber due to the blockade of natural rubber from the East Indies. In 1943, Pharis Tire and Rubber Company acquired Carlisle Tire and Rubber, leading to a subsequent liquidation in 1949 and the redistribution of Carlisle stock to Pharis stockholders. The company was then renamed Carlisle Corporation.
